Emerging Interview Behaviours

Interview Behaviours which are impacting Employers AND Job Seekers

Whether you’re an Employer or Job Seeker, the interview process has changed since we entered the new post Covid world.

There are many factors behind this change which I won’t deep dive into here, but what I do want to focus on is ‘are you getting the most out of the Interview process and is it costing you talent OR your next dream job?’

Employers – the world is changing, and the employment market today is not anything like it was prior to Covid.

There are new expectations from Job Seekers. What this translates to is a different interview experience and one where the traditional model in most cases is out of touch and will hurt you when it comes to attracting the best talent. Job Seekers want to know why they should work for you as much as you are also trying to ascertain if they are right for you. Employers, you need to adapt and provide the buzz for the Job Seeker and be able to look past some emerging behaviours such as a standoffish demeanour… I’ll come back to this one. The point being, there’s a lot more that can be gained from an interview if you are willing and able to adapt your style … and dare I say it, look at your workforce and the flexibility you offer.

Job Seekers – Your skills are in high demand and seemingly you can pick and choose. This is a great place to be BUT REMEMBER this won’t always be the case such are the swings of the employment sector.

Some emerging behaviours carrying through to the interview process is a seemingly standoffish demeanour which at times may even be perceived as arrogant. Oftentimes this isn’t intentional, it’s a sum of all parts involved in what is today’s employment market.

Show interest in any interview you undertake, put your best foot forward and give yourself the possibility of being shortlisted and then you can decide if the opportunity is right for you. On so many occasions I’ve spoken with candidates post interview who were unsuccessful because they held back, and upon reflection they regretted their approach. I’ve heard the phrase many times, “I thought that’s what I was supposed to do” … perhaps playing a little hard ball given they are the hot ticket item.

We are all learning the new landscape and the progressiveness of the employment sector has been incredibly rapid. Let’s work together as professionals and give each other the opportunity to shine.
